Two years ago a group was formed to explore ways the members could challenge individuals and our congregation to make life-style changes as away to show our commitment to caring for the creation. Since then we have been meeting once a month to develop strategies to this end. We decided to issue monthly challenges to the congregation as a way to keep attention on green issues and to offer some practical suggestions for what to do to conserve energy and protects the environment. The challenges have included such things a driving the speed limit to save gas, being more conscious of lights being left on, using household cleaning products that are environmentally friendly, reducing the home winter time temperature and raising it in the summer to save on heat and air conditioning, buying organic food products, stopping the use of bottled water that is no better nutritionally than tap water, but produces thousands of tons of plastic waste, just to name a few. Our group also spearheaded the replacement of all the lights in our church building with energy efficient ones. One of the principles guiding out decision making is that no challenge be made without thorough research on our part o ensure that what we suggest actually does bring the benefits claimed.

This coming fall we will spend time discussing three books Jan wrote that have served as a foundation and guide for the kind of church we are. Most of the new people in the church have not read them, so this will be a timely opportunity for everyone to learn why we are who we are. The adult Sunday School hour and the Wednesday night learning event will be be organized around this discussion. The fall session will begin Sunday, September 12th. |
